The Board met earlier this month and held a very productive
planning day. Some of the key issues revolved around how we structure our
standing committees and manage our industry consultative practices. Key to
this is the organisation being independent, fair and transparent.
It is only by establishing these principles that industry will be happy to
engage with the Board. Dealing with the issue of skilled shortages is placing
pressure on many employers and has already focussed attention on both
retaining existing staff and finding new staff. Two issues that have quickly climbed
up the agenda are Mature Aged Workers and Skilled Migration. The Board has
actively started looking at the Matured Aged Workers issue and you will hear more of this in the coming months. There is also a seminar
on Skilled Migration (see events below) for the Health
& Community Services sector being sponsored by Immigration
SA, Business SA, Adelaide City Council and Department of Immigration and
Multicultural Affairs that you are invited to attend. Congratulations to our Development
Officer, Ian Heard Chairperson |

Mental Health Care Workforce Development Project The Mental Health
Project is now well and truly underway. In this first stage of the project the Project
Officer, Diana MacMullin is making contact with a broad range of
stakeholders, undertaking consultations to gather the sector’s views
regarding the skills needed to work in the community-based mental health
field and current gaps in available training. Diana
has also made a start on the daunting task of profiling the
workforce in this sector. This
project aims to collect quantitative data regarding the numbers of workers,
hours of work, skills and qualifications etc, as well as information relating
to employment retention factors. Within the next few
weeks, she hopes to start talking with consumers to
gather their perspectives regarding issues in the provision of
community-based support services. To register
interest in the project contact Diana on 8362
