Childcare Industry Careers Action Plan

Projects >> Childcare Industry Careers Action Plan

The Skills Board has submitted to DFEEST, the Department for Further Education Employment Science and Technology, an Industry Careers Action Plan for the childcare sector. The Action plan was developed by a 13 member Industry Careers Advisory Group consisting representatives from private & community based childcare operators, registered training organisions, TAFE SA, school career counsellors as well as secondary and TAFE students.

The aim of this project was twofold; first, to improve the current state of industry specific career information available to students and their career advisors; and second, to provide DFEEST with a mechanism through which to examine the career related issues of the childcare sector.

Currently, the State Government is addressing some of the employment concerns of industry through its Childcare Strategy. This project however, attempts to address the major problem of attracting young people into the sector. Industry is well aware of the problems of recruiting and retaining staff, with most industry representatives having first hand experience.

Industry sees this project as a step in the right direction, in terms of dealing with the skills shortage, if the recommendations are acted upon. This is an opportunity for industry, RTOs and the government to work together to address these problems.

The final report is with the DFEEST for consideration. The Board thank DFEEST for their funding of this project and we look forward to their response regarding the proposed ICAP.
