SA Health & Community Services Skills Board - this Edition July 2006

Newsletters >> SA Health & Community Services Skills Board - this Edition July 2006

July 2006

In last month’s this Edition I reported that the Board has a strong project flavour being involved in six projects. This has now increased to seven, but only for a few weeks as the Domestic Violence project will be completed very soon. this Edition looks at our industry profiling project and the two workforce development projects being conducted in partnership with other skills boards.

The Board has recently seen a few changes of personnel. We have been fortunate to co-opt Natalie Hamood, Director Human Resources with Department for Families and Communities, and Jorge Navas, State Secretary of the Health Services Union representing SA Unions. They both add a valuable perspective and broaden the coverage of the Board. There has also been a change in the Australian Nursing Federation representative with Elizabeth Dabars replacing Rob Bonner, who has accepted a seat on the Board of the national CS&H Industry Skills Council. Rob has been an active supporter of the Board and will continue on the Mental Health Steering Committee. His forthright, challenging yet always insightful contribution to the Board will be missed.

It is estimated the indirect labour demand resulting from the expansion of the minerals sector in SA will be in the order of an additional 13,000 jobs in the “service industries”– South Australian Centre for Economic Studies

Health & Community Services Workforce Profiling Project

One of the early findings from this project is that there is a real lack of useful existing workforce data describing and detailing the health & community services industries. The initial project consultations have seen enthusiastic support by industry as there is a clear need to consolidate sector information. The project initiated by the Board seeks not only to profile the health & community services sectors but to also identify the major issues affecting each sector and workforce development activities.

Project Officer Jacky Morris has consulted widely and has developed templates to collect data describing each of the industries and the numerous sub sectors. Forums are being held in August with the aims of gaining industry input into the project.

The information will become an on-line resource and be supported by workforce development tools. If you would like to contribute to this project please contact Jacky Morris.

2007 Workforce Planning Project  – Joint Industry Skills Board Initiative

All nine South Australian Industry Skills Boards have combined to undertake a project to identify major industrial developments planned for 2007 and to report on the direct workforce requirements and their impacts on other sectors.

This project found its genesis with the involvement of the Food Tourism & Hospitality Skills Board (FTH) in the Primo meat processing development at Port Wakefield. Primo’s workforce requirements included a need to transport workers, as there were not enough local employees or housing for new employees. FTH were able to bring together state and federal government departments, job network providers with Primo’s management in a model that successfully assisted in the formation of a new workforce.

It is hoped that the project will assist government and industry work more closely to enhance business, employment and prosperity in South Australia. The Australian Institute of the Social Research have been appointed to conduct the research.

This project is funded by the South Australian Industry Skills Board’s and DFEEST through the Workforce Development Fund.

Community and Services Infrastructure (Mining & Defence) Project

Minister for Further Education Employment and Training, Paul Caica, recently announced the formation of three Industry Skills Board clusters to develop strategies to address the direct and indirect workforce consequences of the major mining and defence developments in SA.

The SA Health & Community Services Skills Board has been clustered with Service Skills SA and FTH Skills Board to look at the impact these developments will have on community and services. This includes activity around the growth of the mining communities such as the need for health, community services, retail, personal services and hospitality, as well as the indirect consequences such as the loss of workers from other areas. The first stage of this project will be the review and analysis of existing data and modelling based on similar developments.

This project is funded by DFEEST through the Workforce Development Fund.
