SA Health & Community Services Skills Board - this Edition December 2007

Newsletters >> SA Health & Community Services Skills Board - this Edition December 2007

December 2007

Welcome to thisEdition.  At the completion of our second year of operation the achievements and growth of our Skills Board have brought many highs as well as significant challenges. The Skills Board has grown and moved to our new offices at 100 Wright Street, Adelaide. We farewelled Bernard Meatheringham as Chair as he took up the role of EO at Government Services Australia and welcomed Heather Barry to the Board and new staff to the organisation (see below).

As we move into a new year the Board will focus on the priorities of strategic planning and the industry engagement. This year the Board completes its first three year plan and needs to plan the Skills Board future for the 2008-2011 period. The focus on industry engagement is an ongoing critical function, as industry support underpins the Board’s success and the validity of our activity.

I am pleased to announce that on 22 May 2008 at the National Wine Centre the Board will be holding our inaugural Human Services at Work Conference and Awards. The conference will be an occasion for the sector to consider the significant workforce issues that we are facing. The Awards will be a celebration of Excellence in Workforce Development. I hope you will put this date in your diary and keep an eye out for further details as they are released.

Traineeship – are we missing out?

At the recent Disability sector–RTO forum Bev Tonkin from DFEEST presented a comprehensive report on the uptake of traineeships in the health and community services sector. Whilst our sector is around 12% of all employment in South Australia our use of traineeships is less than 4% of all traineeships. During 2008 the Skills Board will be busy working to increase the traineeship uptake.

Board AGM

The Board held it AGM in October. The only change to the membership was the nominee of the Department of Health with Kate Hawke replacing Jo Hoiles. Jo has been on the Board for the past two years and has provided many years of service and support to the sector through our predecessor, the Community Services & Health ITAB. End of Year Office Closure

The Skills Board office will be closed from Monday 24th December and re-open on Monday 7th January 2008.  We hope you all enjoy the festive season and wish you all a very happy and peaceful New Year.

Allied Health Project

This project will support the development and implementation of new and emerging health assistant roles in allied health, across public and private health organisations.  They will support the role of allied health professionals, with the aim of increasing productivity, recruitment and retention of workers within the health sector.

The creation of these new allied health assistant roles will enable the following to occur in the sector:

  • employees to 'trial' the work prior to further investment in training
  • easier access to the sector for non-traditional workers and those in rural and remote areas
  • significant flexibility/mobility within the sector (for workers with widely applicable skills)

Disability Sector Workforce Development (DSWD) Project

The DSWD Project aims to promote workforce development within the non-government disability sector to support leadership development, strengthen industry–RTO links, assist attraction and retention of new workers, and to promote best practice employment models.

The Project Objectives include:

  • Design, develop and implement a leadership development program for the disability sector
  • Develop strategies to foster greater linkages between the industry and registered training organisations
  • Develop strategies and design resources to attract and retain new workers to the disability sector
  • Research, document and promote best practice employment models across the disability sector

Rosh Devi is the Project Officer responsible for the implementation of DSWD Project. Rosh comes with a wealth of experience in Public Health, Mental Health, Youth, Disability, Gender issues & Employment Issues and has worked locally and internationally both within Government & Non-Government Sectors.
