Welcome

Welcome to the SA Health & Community Services Skills Board.

Around Australia, and in many other parts of the western world too, governments, industries, organisations and communities are grappling with a new landscape of significant workforce challenges.  These challenges are amongst the top concerns of employers in all kinds of industries.  In South Australia nine Skills Boards have been established to help meet workforce challenges such as:

  • responding to shortages as smaller numbers of people enter the workforce while at the same time many others retire
  • creating new kinds of jobs requiring different skills
  • improving the quality of work available to people, for example through providing career pathways and flexible working arrangements
  • attracting new people into key industries and retaining existing workers
  • overcoming obstacles and barriers that have prevented some people who want to participate in the workforce from doing so

In health and community services these pressures are occuring while there is also an increasing demand for services and the industries are growing.

Industry Skills Boards receive foundation funding from the South Australian government through the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology.  This funding requires us to provide bi-partite advice to government in relation to workforce trends and emerging skills needs, and to work with industry, government and the vocational education and training system on issues relating to:

  • Workforce development
  • Current and emerging workforce priorities
  • Vocational education and training
  • Careers and employment

At the SA Health & Community Services Skills Board, we are determined to make a significant contribution to health and community services in South Australia through providing informaiton, representation, advocacy and support.  We see our role as being to act as a facilitator, catalyst and bridge between the health and community services industries, the government, the vocational education and training system and the community.

AGM and Board Elections

The Skills Board held its AGM at the SA Baptist Centre on 11 November and would like to thank everyone who attended.  The Board's office holders, Rob Bonner (Chair), Kate Hawke (Deputy Chair) and Gayle Peak (Treasurer) were re-elected unopposed and we thank them for their continued support of the Skills Board.   For a full list of Board Members please click here.

The AGM also incorporated a workshop for the Health and Community Services Industry Workforce Action Plan.  With more than 40 people attending this interactive session proved to be a great success with many innovative ideas and suggestions being put forward.
